Mark Kostabi

Mark Kostabi (born in 1960 in Los Angeles) is an American artist of Estonian descent, known for his distinctive style that blends elements of Pop Art, Surrealism, and Neo-Expressionism. After moving to New York in the 1980s, Kostabi became one of the era’s most provocative and controversial figures, drawing attention for both his artwork and his unconventional approach to art production.

In 1988, he founded the famous ‘Kostabi World,’ a studio where he collaborates with numerous artists and assistants to create his works. This ‘industrial’ approach to art production has enabled him to produce a vast number of paintings, keeping a high profile in the art market while sparking debates about the notions of authenticity and authorship. Kostabi’s work, characterized by faceless, anonymous figures and surreal, metaphysical landscapes, explores themes of alienation, identity, consumerism, and the mechanization of modern society.

His works have been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide, including the MoMA in New York and the Groninger Museum in the Netherlands. He has also designed album covers for renowned musical artists, such as Guns N’ Roses and the Ramones, solidifying his status as a cultural icon.
