Trium Art Gallery represents Ibrahim Ballo

We are pleased to announce the representation of Ibrahim Ballo (b. 1986, Bamako) by Trium Art Gallery.

Ballo is one of the most refined and original voices in the contemporary African art scene. His practice merges painting and weaving, turning cotton – a raw material historically rich with meaning in Mali – into the core of a unique artistic language. His work originates from an ancient gesture: hand-twisted cotton thread, like the one he used to watch as a child in the hands of the women in his family, in southern Mali. On those same threads, the artist now constructs images that are layered with memory, resistance, and identity.

Raised amid the textile traditions of the Sikasso region, Ballo has transformed his family heritage into a powerful tool of contemporary expression. After graduating from the Institut National des Arts in Bamako (2012), he pursued a Master’s degree at the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers Multimédia Balla Fasséké Kouyaté.

His work addresses crucial themes such as identity, cultural transmission, and the human condition. The faces emerging from his woven canvases often bear a red mark – a symbol of silent suffering, of what lies beneath the surface.

In recent years, Ballo has received increasing critical recognition and has exhibited in prestigious international contexts, including the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair in Marrakech, London, and New York. His works are part of major private collections, including the OLYM Collection.
