Trium Art Gallery represents Pedro Pires

We are delighted to announce that Pedro Pires (b. 1978, Luanda) has joined the roster of Trium Art Gallery.

Pires is one of the most powerful and distinctive voices on the international art scene. Born in Angola and based between Luanda and Lisbon, his multidisciplinary practice explores the themes of dislocated identity, migration, and human rights, using sculpture, installation, and paper-based interventions to question the body as a fragile yet resistant space of transformation.

“For many years, I’ve been exploring themes of nationality and belonging, and I’m particularly drawn to social structures that speak of division, protection, and identity.” – Pedro Pires.

His works — often made from burnt paper, welded metal, or salvaged materials — emerge through a choreography of abrasion and destruction. Anthropomorphic forms, both incomplete and ephemeral, seem to appear and vanish simultaneously. These are bodies marked by violence, memory, and resilience, positioned within the legacy of postcolonial histories and global dislocation.

Pires reflects on his dual identity — Angolan and Portuguese — and the conflicting realities he inhabits. His artistic vocabulary reveals a constant dialogue between geopolitical borders and personal experience. Even urban barriers and fences — often decorated with floral motifs to appear less hostile — become metaphors for the tension between intimacy and control, separation and belonging.

Pedro Pires holds an MFA from Central Saint Martins (London) and a BA in Sculpture from the Fine Art Faculty of Lisbon. His career spans more than 15 years of institutional recognition and exhibitions around the world, including: Museum of Fine Arts (Montréal), Grand Palais – ArtParis (France), Lagos Biennial (Nigeria), 1:54 Art Fair (London and New York), Sculpture in the City of London, Museum of African Art (Belgrado), Cape Town Art Fair, ExpoChicago (USA), National Museum of Natural History in Luanda, Lorne Biennale in Australia and many others.

He has also participated in key residencies and shows with Fondation Montresso, Blachere Foundation, and LouisSimone Guirandou Gallery, and is represented in important public and private collections, such as the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Flad Foundation, and the Coca-Cola Collection South Africa.
