Interview with Sara Pope!
We are pleased to publish, in collaboration with The Way Magazine, an interview with the renowned contemporary English artist Sara Pope, known worldwide for her ability to convey the intense emotions of the human experience through the depiction of just one small part of the body: the lips!
“Sara Pope’s artworks seem to revolve around a single subject, the lips: they are magnetic, captivating the viewer with their glossy colors and flawless beauty. We were immediately struck by the ‘pop-up’ effect of Sara’s creations—her bold contrasts of color and forms that instantly celebrate the beauty of the subject, naturally drawing the observer in.
Yet, as with any form of art, the beauty lies not only in the artist’s skill but also in the ability to convey sensations, to provoke questions in the viewer, and to foster dialogue from a fresh perspective. From our point of view, Sara Pope’s portrayal of lips is merely a key to turn the gaze back onto ourselves: the artist confronts the viewer with a stark contradiction between truth and illusion, fantasy and reality, individuality and conformity. Her works express the excesses of our time, the desire to keep pace with a lifestyle that is enticing yet unrealistic, illusory, distorted. They challenge us to reflect on our aspirations, life choices, and on who we have been and who we become each day.
Questions arise: how did we reach where we are today? Who has influenced us? Why are we so drawn to perfection? Why do we pursue beauty, fame, wealth? To what end? What do we sacrifice to desire, and at what cost? Is it a form of self-assertion in a capitalist sense of “I buy, therefore I am”? Like Sara Pope’s artworks, we are captivated by excesses, vibrant colors, and enveloping, intoxicating shapes, caught up in this endless cycle without a clear focus, always seeking to understand who we are and what we desire.
Both women and men chase ideals of beauty, fame, and power, in search of a perfect balance that, in turn, often fuels a personal sense of inadequacy. Sara’s works were chosen because they tell a broader story—one of transformation in our culture, a shift in our values and aspirations.”
