Federico Borroni: the artistic journey and the poetics of nature

We had the privilege of meeting Federico Borroni in his studio in Marghera, where we discovered not only his technique and creative process but also the extraordinary story behind his works. His painting comes to life through a meticulous and profound observation of nature, which, for him, is never just an objective reality to be reproduced, but a starting point for a genuine transformation. Nature, through Borroni’s eyes, becomes the key to accessing another level of reality, where the visible and the invisible intertwine in a dense web of signs, symbols, and suggestions.

The creative process of the artist begins with the vision of natural fragments, which Borroni captures in his mind and transcribes into sketches on paper. However, his painting does not simply reproduce these elements; rather, he reinterprets them, and in an almost alchemical gesture, begins to fill and transform these natural fragments to create a new form of ultraterrestrial nature. What emerges is a complex and layered system—a work that closely recalls the siepe (hedge) of Leopardi: a barrier that does not separate, but invites exploration beyond it, into a world of infinite possibilities.

The artist translates this web of signs onto the canvas, creating works that envelop the viewer and invite them to enter a dimension where the boundary between the visible and the invisible dissolves. The dense web Borroni creates is not merely a pictorial sign but a visual experience that challenges the observer to ask questions. What lies beyond this web of transformed nature? New worlds to explore? Infinite possibilities for interpretation? The viewer becomes an active participant in the creative process, engaging not only with the analysis of the work but with its continuous evolution. Borroni’s painting is never static: every time it is observed, it reveals itself in a new light, offering a different perspective and a continual reflection on art and nature.

A new chapter: ceramics and the encounter with Montefiore 66

An exciting chapter in Federico Borroni’s artistic research is his recent exploration of the world of ceramics. During the MEGA Art Fair 2025 in Milan, from April 2nd to 6th, there will be a talk dedicated to exploring Borroni’s connection with Montefiore 66, a ceramics workshop located in the heart of the Recanati hills. Founded in the 1980s, this space has fostered a unique encounter between ceramic tradition and creative freedom, welcoming artists and craftsmen eager to explore the material and transform it into expressive language.

Borroni found in Montefiore 66 a place where his pictorial practice could expand and take shape in new forms. His recent ceramic works, collected in the Teatrini (Nicchie) series, are a natural evolution of his pictorial language. Borroni’s ceramics are not just objects, but self-contained narrative worlds that come to life through the encounter with Montefiore 66’s ceramic tradition and community. These works are the result of a process in which clay becomes not only matter but also history and meaning, shaped by the artist’s hands into a language that blends tradition with experimentation, past with future.

During the talk with curator Alberto Navilli, Borroni will recount his meeting with the Montefiore 66 community and how it influenced his creative journey. This will be a unique opportunity to discover how ceramics, while maintaining a strong connection with tradition, can be transformed into an innovative and contemporary language that enriches the current art scene.
