From October 9 to 11, 2026, Verona hosts a new edition of Art Verona, one of the most significant events on the Italian and European calendar dedicated to modern and contemporary art, under the artistic direction of Laura Lamonea.

We are pleased to announce our participation in this edition with a presentation entirely dedicated to Rafael Baron – the artist’s first solo show in Italy, and the official start of his representation by Trium Art Gallery.

Born in 1986 in Nova Iguaçu, Brazil, Rafael Baron builds his research around the tradition of portrait painting, reread through a fully contemporary sensibility. Before turning to painting, Baron trained across seemingly distant disciplines – a degree in Theology from FAECAD, studies in Photography at SENAC in Rio de Janeiro – before deepening his practice in drawing, painting and art history with Sérgio Dias, Celso Mathias and Thiago Martins, alongside a period at the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage, Rio’s storied art school. A non-linear path that shows through in the freedom with which each figure is constructed.

His canvases hold enigmatic figures, deliberately ambiguous in gesture: pronounced lips, dark, half-closed eyes, densely patterned textiles that become narrative elements in their own right – often more expressive than the faces themselves. Curators and critics who have followed his work have noted how his group compositions bring together bodies that differ in ethnicity, gender, hairstyle and dress, forming a sense of community built precisely through difference. It is a practice Baron himself describes as a tool for dialogue – an invitation to tolerance and coexistence rather than a statement, one that turns the viewer into something close to a co-author of the characters he creates.

His exhibition history already spans several significant international milestones: the solo show Entitled at The Cabin, Los Angeles (2021), participation in Roll with It at Scott Miller Projects in Birmingham, Alabama, and Fragmented Bodies III at Albertz Benda, New York – the gallery with which, in April 2022, he presented the solo exhibition Portraits, followed that November by Pose. Also in 2022, MAR – Museu de Arte do Rio invited him to the group show Crônicas Cariocas, where he presented a panel of forty small-format paintings alongside two medium-format works. His works are today held in major public and private collections in Brazil and abroad, including MAR – Museu de Arte do Rio itself and the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM).

In 2019/2020, Baron also received the “Garimpo” award, presented by Dasartes magazine and reserved for emerging Brazilian artists who have not yet held a solo exhibition at an art institution – an early recognition of a practice that has since continued to gain international ground.

At Art Verona 2026, we will present a selection of unpublished works, created by the artist specifically for the occasion – the first chapter in a dialogue we are certain will offer Italian audiences a pictorial perspective as intense as it is necessary.
