Ibrahim Ballo

Born in Bamako, Mali, in 1986, Ibrahim Ballo is one of the most compelling voices in contemporary African art. After graduating from the Institut National des Arts in Bamako in 2012, he completed a Master’s degree in Visual Arts at the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers Multimédia Balla Fasséké Kouyaté, where he developed a distinctive practice that merges painting with textile traditions.

Deeply inspired by Malian textile heritage, Ballo incorporates natural cotton threads—rich in historical and symbolic value- into acrylic-based compositions, creating works where texture and color coexist in a tactile, multidimensional surface. His technique, rooted in the tradition of bogolan and handwoven pagnes, becomes a contemporary medium for storytelling and cultural preservation.

Beyond their visual impact, Ballo’s works resonate with emotional and social depth. His figures often bear a red mark on their faces – symbols of hidden suffering, dignity, and resilience – offering poignant reflections on collective memory and the human condition.

Since his breakthrough solo presentation at AKAA Art Fair in Paris in 2018, Ballo’s career has gained international momentum. He has exhibited at the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair in Marrakech, London, and New York, and his work is included in prominent collections such as the OLYM Collection. An active member of the Tim’arts and Sanou’art collectives in Bamako, Ibrahim Ballo continues his exploration of material, memory, and meaning—bridging tradition and modernity with a uniquely powerful visual language.
