Born in Trapani in 1924, Carla Accardi moved to Rome in 1946 and, the following year, co-founded the Forma 1 group with Achille Perilli, Piero Dorazio, and Giulio Turcato. The collective introduced abstraction in Italy with a strong experimental and intellectual drive.
From the 1950s onward, Accardi developed a distinctive style characterized by calligraphic signs and essential color fields. In the 1960s and 1970s, she began working with sicofoil, a transparent plastic material that enabled her to create luminous, lightweight surfaces, blurring the boundaries between painting and installation. At the same time, she actively engaged with the debate on the role of women in art, becoming a reference for younger generations.
Her career was marked by major exhibitions and critical recognition: she took part in the Venice Biennale multiple times (from 1948 to 1988) and exhibited at prestigious institutions such as the MoMA in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Tate Modern in London, the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid, and the MAXXI in Rome.
Carla Accardi is regarded as one of the most significant Italian artists of the 20th century, whose work reshaped the language of painting and established a vital presence within the international art scene.
