Andy Warhol: Ladies and Gentlemen at Palazzo dei Diamanti Ferrara

Fifty years after its first appearance, Ladies and Gentlemen by Andy Warhol stands today as one of the most radical and forward-thinking bodies of work in his career – one that continues to resonate with striking relevance in our contemporary visual and cultural landscape.

Created between 1975 and 1976, the series marks a decisive turning point in Warhol’s practice. After defining the mythology of celebrity through iconic figures such as Marilyn Monroe and Mick Jagger, the artist shifted his focus toward a more intimate and, at the same time, deeply political dimension. His subjects became anonymous African American and Puerto Rican drag queens from New York’s underground scene – figures historically marginalized, here elevated to the status of contemporary icons through a sequence of hypnotics, vibrant, and psychologically charged portraits.

Within these works lies a powerful tension between construction and authenticity: identity emerges not as something fixed, but as a performative act. It is precisely this insight that makes Ladies and Gentlemen profoundly contemporary, anticipating themes that define our present era – self-representation, fluid identity, and the mediated image.

This vision is now brought back into focus through the major exhibition “Andy Warhol. Ladies and Gentlemen”, currently on view at Palazzo dei Diamanti from March 14 to July 19, 2026. Rather than a simple retrospective, the exhibition offers an immersive re-staging of one of the most daring moments in Warhol’s career, and in the history of contemporary art in Italy.

Curated by Chiara Vorrasi and organized by Fondazione Ferrara Arte together with the Modern and Contemporary Art Galleries of Ferrara, with the support of the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, the exhibition brings together over 150 works, including paintings, silkscreens, drawings, and Polaroids from major international collections.

At its core lies the Ladies and Gentlemen series, presented in a way that evokes the original 1975–76 exhibition, allowing visitors to rediscover the raw energy and cultural significance of the project. Alongside this central body of work, the exhibition expands into Warhol’s broader portrait practice, juxtaposing globally recognized icons with lesser-known yet equally compelling figures, culminating in a powerful selection of self-portraits in which the artist himself becomes subject and construct.
