There are artists who develop a style, and there are artists who create a language. A vocabulary of signs, figures, and symbols so personal that a signature becomes almost unnecessary, because the work is immediately recognizable. Adam Handler belongs to this rare tradition.

His wide-eyed characters, the figures suspended between memory and imagination, and the essential line that defines his practice have become one of the most distinctive visual languages in contemporary international painting. With Where It All Began, the artist residency organized in Naples by Trium Art Gallery in collaboration with NOH-ART Contemporary and under the artistic direction of the collector Ernesto Esposito, Adam Handler chose to return to one of the places that played a defining role in his personal and creative formation.

Long before his international recognition, the artist spent an important period between Naples and the Amalfi Coast, where direct engagement with the landscape, the city’s extraordinary cultural layers, and its unique human energy helped shape the sensitivity that still permeates his work today.

Naples, however, is more than a geographical setting. It is a city built through accumulation, where history and everyday life coexist continuously, where the sacred and the profane, beauty and fragility, joy and melancholy seem to belong to the same narrative. In this sense, Handler’s return carries a meaning that goes far beyond that of a conventional residency: it becomes a dialogue between two memories, that of the artist and that of the city itself.

During his time in Naples, a new body of work emerged, one that does not depict the city literally but rather absorbs its rhythm, atmosphere, and emotional resonance, transforming them into images. Night walks, encounters, places discovered, and the ongoing exchange with the surrounding environment all became part of a creative process that found expression both in the works on paper created during the first days of the residency and in the paintings on canvas that followed.

The project also offered collectors, curators, and art enthusiasts a rare opportunity: to witness an artist at the very moment when the work comes into being. Rather than presenting a finished result, Where It All Began revealed the process itself – that fragile and precious moment when experience, memory, and imagination are transformed into a visual sign.

The works created during the residency demonstrate how Adam Handler’s language continues to evolve while remaining deeply true to itself. His gesture is instantly recognizable, yet it allows itself to be shaped by places, people, and lived experience, proving that an authentic artistic language is never static but rather a living structure capable of embracing new stories.

The catalogue accompanying this project brings together the works created during the Neapolitan residency and documents a particularly intimate chapter in the artist’s research. More than a record of an artist residency, it is the story of a return. Because sometimes, returning to where everything began is the only way to understand where everything is going.
